The Ashevillage Insitute (AVI) 
AVI is an emerging eco-urban education center and living laboratory for sustainable solutions in action.  AVI is based in a neighborhood a few blocks from downtown Asheville, North Carolina.


Educational programs:
Since 2007, AVI's programming has included Permaculture Design Certification; natural building: cob, adobe, wattle & daub, slipstraw, plasters & paints, green roofs, bamboo construction; rainwater & greywater catchment; wild food & fermentation; and bee-keeping.  In the future, programming may include backyard sustainability, shitake production, sacred geometry & geomancy and other related subjects.

Living at AVI:
Rooms in the AVI house and tent platforms in the woods are available now for the 2009 season.  We're seeking positive, mature residents with experience in the above fields.  Rooms range from $425-$500 + utilities.  Tent platforms are $250 + utilities. Both rooms and woods residents have full access to shared house amenities and receive a 20% discount on all AVI programs.  If interested, please email or call for more info.

*An urban demonstration of & support network for residential permaculture
*A hands-on sustainability center for classes, workshops & service learning
*A living community for AVI’s live-in staff & interns 
*A center for the future “Eco-Hood” pilot project

Timeline:
2007: Complete house retrofit including clay plasters/paints; get Certificate of Occupancy; permaculture design begins; shed relocation; establish greenhouse & tent areas; exterior grading; complete garottage (adobe out building); design outdoor classroom; kudzu management
2008
: Establish gardens, compost & humanure; host educational programs increase gardens; tree work; greywater & rainwater systems; construct outdoor courtyard/kitchen/classroom; mosaic bathroom and fireplace; interior earthen floor
2009: Create master permaculture design; complete coutryard; establish front yard gardens; host programs; work on funding and "EcoHood Pilot Project"



Parent organization:
AVI is a project of Kleiwerks International, a non-profit organization that empowers communities to be more sustainable by teaching hands-on natural building and whole-systems solutions.  Since 1998, Kleiwerks has built dozens of community centers using natural and renewable materials.  We have trained thousands of people from over 30 countries and have led hundreds of educational programs.  AVI is the headquarters for Kleiwerks and is based in Asheville, NC.
